Nutritional Sciences, Univ of IL-Urbana/Champaign *M.D. University of Illinois College of Medicine *Residency, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Indiana University School of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals, Indianapolis, IN *Fellowship, Clinical Nutrition, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN My interest in nutrition has been and continues to be quite broad. I was blessed to study under many devoted teachers and keen researchers at UIUC during my graduate program (one of the reasons I came back to this great college town). My advisor was Donald Layman (where we researched on BCAA metabolism and gluconeogenesis in a moderate protein diet) and my thesis committee included Jeffrey Woods and the late Peter Reeds. Many others there also made a lasting impact on me and have left a wonderful legacy through the UIUC Division of Nutritional Sciences. I seized the opportunity to study further in clinical nutrition at IUSOM after my residency. My primary mentors, Mark Corkins (Pediatric GI / Hep / Nutr) and Allon Friedman (Adult Nephrology), helped me to craft a solid experience anticipating board certification from ABPNS. Again, many other teachers and researchers at the IUSOM affiliated hospitals afforded me superb learning opportunities and left a lasting impact on me. Currently I practice rural primary care within a large multispecialty physician group. I teach with the University of Illinois College of Medicine. My hopes for the future would be to teach and research with nutrition and medicine here at UIUC and continue my practice of medicine. There are many unanswered questions in this niche of clinical, translational, and basic science research. I hope it may further the art and science of medicine with: improved clinical quality, lessened societal (Western) morbidity, reduced cost of care, and emboldened international health.
